Some women have discovered a middle ground between 
asking a man out and waiting to be asked. 
They get someone to tell the man that they are interested in him!
I imagine that this is much less risky than a face-to-face meeting,
and still gets the message across.
This has happened to me several times, and I find it almost as
exciting as being told directly. On one of these occassions, I was really
not interested. I simply didn't follow up. On other occassions,
I have called the women and have had some pleasant times that
I might not have had otherwise.
