Does that questioner really care? At MIT, research would grind to a halt without federal funding. Thus, all of the equipment I use says "PROPERTY OF US GOVERNMENT" on it. I just say, "I work for the government." (this is for social value only. When I want to be less pretentious, I tell them I work at MIT) If they really care, they'll ask me what I do for the government. "I design fast computers."
