I've seen two articles now saying that those of us who are into fashion are wasting our time, our money, and repelling the appropriate sex. Well, just cut it out! Putting on makeup and wearing flattering clothes is practically an art in my book. Clothes just by themselves are considered art. Obviously, none of you have ever been to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY when they have one of their clothes exhibits. Women and men should be able to express their own individual tastes any way they please. They don't need a bunch of self-righteous "non-conformists" telling them that the way they dress is a sign of moral decline. I'm going to draw an analogy between indulging one's whims in fashion and skiing. I choose skiing because it happens to be one of my favorite sports. Many people think skiing is a waste of time and money, not to mention physically unpleasant and possibly dangerous. I spend a lot of money on skiing. I spend a lot of time planning ski trips, driving to ski areas and even skiing(though the percentage of time you actually spend skiing is usually pretty low). I've frozen my butt off. I have never been injured, but I know enough people who have. So why do I keep doing it? Lord only knows! I love it. At times skiing can be magical. A lot of the time it's sheer hell. But I love it. And I know lots of people think I'm crazy for risking my life to some silly sport. Lots of people probably think I should be giving the money to the Red Cross instead of airlines, hotels and ski resorts. But I don't care. And the same thing applies to people who want to spend their time and money on makeup and clothes. It's their time and their money. Let them do with it what they will. It's one of their little pleasures in life. Let them enjoy it. No one should feel ashamed of trying to look their best. Radical feminists may wish to disagree with me. They say that women have been forced into a mold that says they should wear makeup and high heels. Maybe that was true of my mother, but it isn't true for me. And I don't think anyone has the right to tell my mom that she should rebel against this social mold. It's part of her now. She enjoys it and it makes her feel good. I see no reason to make her feel guilty because she wants to look good. Throwing away the old feminine trappings doesn't mean ignoring the way you look. It should mean "I want to look this way. I have chosen to look a certain way and no one should try to make me feel guilty because I have chosen to look this way." This goes for women who don't shave their legs, women who want to wear makeup, and women who want to spend 1/2 their gross income on the latest styles. Sharon Badian ihnp4!mtgzz!seb
