Thank you, James.  No, it was not an attack on hobbies as
such--but a lot of people out there have been regarding
getting involved with helping others (whether on an
interpersonal or international scale) as a dirty word!!
I can't understand this at all.  

I try to achieve a balance between engaging in relaxing
hobbies (roller skating, reading) and doing things that
open my mind to what's going on around me.  Why this should
be treated with contempt is beyond me.

It also doesn't say much for someone who doesn't know
what a kibbutz is.
