That said, I find myself defending it once again. I recently posted a response to an article by Pooh on this very subject. Either I missed Pooh's point or a lot of people missed mine. To get things rolling again I repost Pooh's posting (bear with me): >Doesn't anybody out there think that there are more >important things in the world to be concerned with >than COLOR ANALYSIS, for crying out loud??? >I can think of hundreds of more useful classes to >take. And if you have so much time and money on >your hands that you can afford to sit around and >wonder whether your shirt is really matching your >complexion, then I suggest you try working on a >kibbutz in Israel (and doing guard duty there), >finding out what's holding up the food shipments to >Ethiopia, or at the VERY least going out and cheering >up a depressed friend. >No wonder so many Americans are seen as shallow >and narcissistic. Jeezus. >Asbestos stockings for all, >Pooh And now for a few words in Pooh's defense from Mr. Armstrong... >>>Having been following this discussion for a while, I suspect that >>>what pooh was refering to was taking a "frivolous" course in order >>>to meet MOTAS is foolish. To that, I must agree. >>>I also must agree that everybody needs leisure time activities.{ >>>When I am not reconciling the Russians and the Chinese :-), I, too, >>>like to relax . I doubt very seriously if pooh's posting was an >>>attack on hobbies, etc. >>>James C Armstrong, Jnr. ihnp4!abnji!nyssa Well, not exactly, James. Pooh says nothing in regards to any MOTAS hunt. She specifically attacks Color Analysis, in effect calling it a waste of time and money that ought be applied to pursuits she considers worthwhile ( monocentricity lives ). She even implies that the very existance of Color Analysis is indicative of a state of American society that causes us to be held in low worldly esteem. Hmmm... She also tacks on that ever popular deadly sin, narcissism. Quick, Homer, get the torches, those damn Color Analysts are meetin' in Jeb's cellar. Now really.... I simply can not see why Color Analysis is so reviled by so many. It seems to me a relatively innocuous (sp?) activity. It seems to yield some debatably positive results ( " It's better to look good than to feel good" :-) ). Hell, I'd rather see my future offspring into self adornment than, say, watching game shows. Gets 'em out of the house, don't you see. But I digress... Let's examine this specific point of taking a frivolous course to meet MOTAS as being silly. Perhaps, but I submit to the net the question of how many of our daily activities are equally silly. How many rounds of golf ( the third silliest sport in the known universe ) have been played to further business pursuits? How many Nautilus machines have been worn out for the chance to speak with the cutie ( or hunk ) on the lat pulldown? etc. etc. etc. How many things have you done with motives not directly related to the event itself? Everbody ready, a thankful response from Pooh to James... " Thank you, James. No, it was not an attack on hobbies as such--but a lot of people out there have been regarding getting involved with helping others (whether on an interpersonal or international scale) as a dirty word!! I can't understand this at all. I try to achieve a balance between engaging in relaxing hobbies (roller skating, reading) and doing things that open my mind to what's going on around me. Why this should be treated with contempt is beyond me. It also doesn't say much for someone who doesn't know what a kibbutz is. Pooh " No, I don't think helping people is a dirty word. I do not hold people who have "balanced" lives in contempt. Certainly not the contempt Pooh seems to have for those who seek a fashion sense. Apparently she feels that, unlike her mature outlook, these poor misguided women and men devote themselves entirely to the quest for the perfect blouse. They certainly couldn't be doing anything "useful" with their time and money if they are airheaded enough to be interested in their personal apperance. My, my, my ... Enough said. In closing, I do know what a Kibbutz is, but suggesting I guard one is bit pro Israel for me. Besides, the commute would be such a bitch.
