I don't remember the source, but Roddenberry (no sp flames, please!) didn't want to include the SSSSSSSHHHHHHHHH noise, but NBC officials said that the Intro was too dull & bland, so they forced him to add the sound effect. Gene was no dummy, he knew all about space bing noiseless. If you doubt me, check the intro to Where no Man Has Gone Before. No SSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHH! -- Jonathan D.
