Davison's cricket ball with its off-again, on-again momentum just
continued an old and established Dr Who tradition.  In "Frontier in
Space", Pertwee's Doctor, while clambering about the outside of a space
ship wearing a space suit, found himself drifting away from the ship.
His solution was to pull the air hose from his helmet, get his
bearings, then aim the hose away from the ship.  The hose began
spitting air as soon as he pulled it (we could see an opaque white
gas), but only when he had it pointed directly away from the ship did
he begin to get any push from it.
