He said he had had a lot of fun working on the show, but that it had, after all the time he had spent on it, become repetitious. I think I heard he did not wish to "share" his role with the other Four Doctors. The bits of film came from "Shada," a Douglas Adams episode that was never completed because of a BBC strike.
