USG was the "UNIX Support Group".  #ifdef USG meant, basically,
if one of the systems they supplied.  These looked like UNIX
System III and V.  (USG 3.0, 5.0, etc. internal nomenclature.)

I think the current counterpart of USG is the UNIX System
Development Lab.  Somebody will correct me if I'm wrong..
