The standard version of talk(1) as delivered does not work across two machines linked by such a connection. However, the talk program on one side does seem to make contact with the talk daemon running on the other. (When compiled with the debugging options, the foreign daemon prints out a lot of messages when brought into action by the local talk program). However, talk's own protocol somehow seems to become messed up and nothing much happens after that. All ideas and help are received very gratefully indeed.
