Some time ago someone posted  a shell script to produce permuted indices
for news articles.  I'm slowly transferring our news archives (net.sources
etc) to tape at the same time producing an index.  The problem is we
haven't room anywhere to unpack all news items at the same time so
does anyone know of an easy way to merge permuted indices?
