HEY!! There is nothing bizarre about "Antelope" for a town name! I'm from the Antelope Valley, in which you can find Antelope Acres. Also a Quartz Hill, a Palmdale (named for its joshua trees (which aren't palms)), a Lancaster (named for Hannibal Missouri), and a Pearblossom (as in _The_Crows_of_...)(ever read much Aldous Huxley?).
