Most of the failures in graphite rods I've seen split near the ferule. When buying a graphite rod be sure to check for reinforcing thread wrappings around the female side of the ferule. A good graphite fly rod is far superior to any fiberglas counterpart. There are poor graphite rods on the market, though. Mike McNelly hplabs!hpfcla!mike
