I understand that UNIX's set-user-ID mechanism was one of the first (if not THE first) software patents. It has nothing to do with particular hardware or servicing a particular application--I would assume that a computer implemented with bistable algae built solely for performing a simulation of water flow is still covered by this patent, should it require such a file-security mechanism. -Ed Hall decvax!randvax!edhall
