I would like to find references on causal Markov fields defined not only on
1-D chains, but also on arbitrary ordered structures, including as particular
cases 2-D or 3-D raster images, quadtrees, etc.. I have been studying possible
definitions and general properties of such generalized Markov fields, and I
want to find possible applications of such a theory in Image Processing and
Scene Analysis. I am in particular interested in results similar to Baum's
algorithm for computing a hidden Markov chain given noisy observations.

I am planning to write something on the subject, but before that I want to
know what has already been done in that direction.
