At the time I never missed it. I read a lot but I especially remember playing games with my sisters and brother. These were usually role playing games using our favorite books as models. I don't know whether or not we would have done this if there had been a TV, though even when we did get one when I was 10, it was pretty heavily rationed (no Saturday cartoons after 9am, none weekdays until after dinner, to bed at 8pm). I still don't watch a lot. I have a few favorite shows + I watch the news. The only thing that I've noticed about missing 4 years of TV is when others in my generation talk about old favorites that I've never seen (Mickey Mouse Club, and Little Rascals to name a couple) but I don't feel particularly deprived. Though if I had been missing them while my friends were watching them and talking about it in school (note that my friends at the time also had no TV) I might have felt differently. I did go to a friends house to watch Dark Shadows because my parents banned it. As for my daughter (now 5 mos.) I haven't really decided. I'm not going to ban it, since I like it myself, but I do think it should be rationed to some extent in order for her to develop other interests.
