It hurt like hell, and afterwards, people reported that their lesions healed much faster. When a study was actually performed, they noted that ether was no more effective (and quite a bit more painful) than a placebo. While I'm not aware of any particular studies on peroxide's effects on herpes lesions, I strongly suspect that these have been performed, and that there is no real effect of peroxide.
