What happened? > Yes I did hear about it, but I did not hear the cause. With his passing, no one other than the leader of Miles Davis "classic" quintet of the mid fifties survives. Red Garland died within the past year, and both John Coltrane and Paul Chambers (after whom 'Trane named the song Mr. PC) have been gone for quite a while. 'Philly' was attached the late drummer's name because at the time he was coming up and making a name for himself, one of the great drummers was Jo Jones of the Basie band; as Jo jones became an elder statesman of jazz, he became fondly known as Papa Jo Jones. Sadly and ironically, Papa Jo Jones died yesterday, less than a week after the death of Philly Joe Jones. Papa Jo was in his mid seventies and had been ill for some time. Bill Hery
