I approach the keyboard trepiditously, and with eggy face.  I goofed.
I'd had a test version of subscribers running (with already created
data files to save time) which is what I distributed to y'all and
installed in our news directory here.  Like I said, oops.

To get it to work, remove commentation from two lines towards the
the end of the file.  One is the "find" which finds all the .newsrc
files, and the other is the pipeline which generates the input file
for the big awk script.  If you don't do this then the awk script
has no input and the program doesn't work.

Isn't it neat how simple things are sometimes?
