At any rate, often when I am driving in the mountains I could swear that I am moving level or downhill when my car is letting me know that it is going uphill. (It tends to complain.) I wonder how much of this is optical illusion and how much is confusion of the inner ear--the same sort of thing that a pilot may experience under instrument conditions. I have heard of cases where a pilot refused to believe the instruments and dove into the ground, thinking that the plane was in level flight.
