As a postscript, it is also of note that Rav Ovadia Yosef has
recently been quoted in the Israeli press as having said that
the mashiach is a Sfardi.

It sometimes pains me no end when I reflect that we divide ourselves
according to the names of the two countries that have done us the
most harm.  Sfarad (Spain) expelled us and lit us on pyres, and
Ashkenaz (Germany) built factories to destroy one million of our
children.

Maybe someday we'll learn.
