Here another suggestion on the problem of enhancing the digitized
image of the old prayer book writings.  If you still have the original
paper in question, try photographing it with infrared film through an IR
filter of course.  This method is frequently used by law enforcement
personnel when dealing with old, erased, or altered documents.  The Kodak 
publication M-28 (Applied Infrared Photography) covers the technique on
pages 44-47  ($6. from Kodak).
