In theory the armor vaporizes when hit and carries away the enegry of the laser. (The armor becomes less effective after each it). But in truth, the Stormtroppers are cannon fodder and the real purpose of the suits is so you can tell goods guys from bad guys... Elric (Only imperial storm troopers could be so accurate....)
