The story was told me as follows: many of the then-new (now rich and
famous) Science Fiction authors were sitting around griping about how
they weren't making any money.  Then Heinlein or someone said, "Well,
you KNOW the only way to make money these days is to found a new
religion or invent a new therapy."  At which point, Hubbard got a 
funny look in his eye, dashed out of the room, and the rest is history...
(Naturally, I have no idea if this is true, but it sure makes a better
story than some Hubbard's written!)
