Shortly after my (former) wife and I moved to Denver, we found that it was difficult for either of us to come home to an empty apartment - we'd both come from good-sized families. Our solution was to get two kittens (which eventually became more important than WHERE we lived, just so we could still keep them.) The funny thing is that once my son was born, the cats seemed to sense that they were not needed - mine in particular started running away, eventually succeeding.
