I the process of trying to understand just what CD technology is available and how much one has to pay for it, I find myself confused about the SONY line of players. According to the SONY glossy ad in the September _Audio_, the CDP-520ES and the 620ES have the same reproduction hardware. That is, they both have the UNILINEAR system. From the specs they give for phase linearity ( <45 degrees at 20kHz ) I would assume that they both have 1 D/A converter. The recent _Digital Audio_ issue with the review of the CD players would seem to support this, stating that both of the players have 1 D/A converter. The _Digital Audio_ review states that the 650ESD player has 2 D/A converters. However, Leonard Feldman, in the Sept. _Audio_, implies that the reproduction systems of the 620 and 650 are the same. Does this mean that they have the same number of D/A converters? I guess the question is really: how many D/A converters does the 620ES have? If it has only 1 then I can't really see paying an extra $300 over the 520ES, even though there may be other significant differences in the construction, programability, etc. Can anyone give me the full scoop on the SONY hardware? Thanks. Minor (hp-pcd!mcross) Brought to you by Super Global Mega Corp .com
