My suggestion for an under $1000 system including CD player, reciever, and
speakers: buy it used.  However, for those who like new equipment, I would 
suggest:
       Magnavox 1041 CD player : $289.99
       Nad 7130 Receiver       :  348.00
       Polk Audio Monitor 5B   :  380.00
     Total:                     $1018.00

These are all list, so you can probably find discounts to bring these prices
considerably down from the above.
