It seems to me that this series of speculations has been discussed before, and that Byrne and Claremont used it for a model when they created Gladiator. I don't remember where I saw this, but I think it was actually printed somewhere that Gladiator was supposed to be Superman. Along those lines, how many other characters have been "Superman"? I can think of 4. Gladiator, Hyperion, Captain Marvel, and Marvelman (I mean Miracleman).
