Richard Stallman's GNU Emacs version 16.60 is now available from
site osu-eddie.  This is originally version 16.56 with the patches
distributed over net.sources applied.  The complete distribution
including the TeX-format manual is present.  Files altered using the
patch program have been retained in the unlikely event they are
needed.  No other bug fixes or patches are present.

GNU Emacs is kept online for distribution purposes as a packed tar
file, cut into ten pieces for the sake of UUCP sanity.  (UUCP will not
normally succeed on a single file more than a couple 100Kb long.)  Any
site wishing to copy GNU Emacs from osu-eddie in this form is welcome
to do so during non-prime hours.

An L.sys line suitable for osu-eddie:

   osu-eddie Any ACU 1200 1-614-422-7709 login: gnumacs word: gnumacs

Modify as appropriate for your site, of course.  This is a restricted
login, in that osu-eddie will not permit logging in under the userid
`gnumacs' outside the period 6pm-6am Eastern time.  This is to save
prime-time operation for (primarily) local access.

The files for GNU Emacs can be accessed from UUCP as the set of files
~/gnumacs.dist/Part-[a-j].  That's ten parts.  They are set up as 9
pieces which are exactly 200000 bytes long, and a fragment 10th, which
is 104179 bytes long.  If your UUCP session with osu-eddie fails
midway, you can restart at the part which failed, without having to
start over entirely.  This should reduce the grief component
considerably.  Total time spent on the phone at 1200 baud with
osu-eddie while picking up the files should be on the order of 2 to 3
hours.

After copying the files, you should then
	cat Part-[a-j] > edist.tar.Z
and uncompress edist.tar.Z.  Edist.tar was compressed with compress
version 4.0.  The uncompressed version of edist.tar is exactly
4,823,040 bytes long.

If you do not have compress already, that is also available from UUCP
as the file ~/compress.shar.  It is about 82K long.

These instructions are accessible from UUCP as ~/gnumacs.ins.
