The job involves working to help us provide the best possible unix environment for our researchers, instructors and students. Currently we run 4.2bsd on two VAX 780s which are on an ethernet with another 780 running VMS and Eunice. (Later we intend to connect our research 4381 to the ethernet using the WISCNET package.) Math/Computer Science, which accounts for 95% of our unix usage (the rest is by the Psychology Department) has a vax 750 running unix which networks with us as well. The Unix system support programmer will have an opportunity to interact closely with Math/CS in interesting system support projects. There is a lot of interest in networking on campus. We are installing a broadband campus network, and we are going to connect our machines to BITNET and X25NET. There are a lot of workstations that could connect to the campus network along with the above mentioned mainframes and other minicomputers. There is growing interest in unix on campus as more and more areas install small machines running it. There is already a lot of unix interest in the Atlanta area, as evidenced by the attendance at the Atlanta Unix Users Group meetings which are held monthly on the Emory campus. This is a challenging, dynamic job that pays a competitive salary. We also have an excellent benefits package that includes educational opportunities and courtesy scholarships for dependents.
