I have always felt that kids will always want to stay up later than they should. Dr Spock wrote that small children need 10 to 12 hours of sleep every day. We insist our two are in bed between 7:30 and 8:00 every night even though the other kids in the neighborhood are still outside playing. It's hard to convince them to try to sleep when their friends can be heard outside but in the morning we have no trouble getting the oldest (6 yrs) up and ready for the school bus.
