Well, my two cats can hear a can of cat food being opened from anywhere in the house. The moment I crunch down on the can lid with the opener, I hear CLUNK-pat-pat-pat-pat-pat and one or two cats will come into the kitchen. This is based on hearing, not smell, because the same thing happens if I open a can of something other than cat food.
