     In myself, the need to be alone tends to come when things get to
complicated, with an SO or life in general.  When it happens my strongest desire
is to hop on my bike and head for the north country, the wilds, to get away from
not just people but life which is happening to fast.  This is almost never 
practical so i rarely give into the urge.  Instead I retreat internally, I 
become very quiet and seek space away from others.  When life becomes to tangled
a little time out gives us time to sort thins our consiously or not...
     On the other hand, it can be hard for others, especially a SO, when they
need you but you need not them...
