Can someone send me a schedule of events, directions to the course, or good places to stay in the area. I am considering camping out, and my campground book shows a state park and a campground near Houghton, which is listed as the location of the rally. Usually, there are one or two spectator stages run in the late afternoon, and then its off to the deep woods and night time. I have worked several events in a bunch of capacities. The organizers almost always have trouble rounding up enough people to work, and believe me, workers do get the best seats. The positions I have worked are: scoring: boring - stay away from it. course marshall - Really good. You keep traffic off the course from connecting roads. Half the time you are sitting right on a turn, and get to watch people going by at speed Control worker - Not bad at all. Watch the cars come into the controls and all the frenzy when something goes wrong. You are the person who knows the scoring first hand. Lead/sweep car - This is the best. You get to run the course at speed. This is a tricky job to get, but there are ways, see below. How to get involved Contact the SCCA for the name and phone of the organizer. The organizer will get you in touch with the worker coordinator. Be sure to tell him of any experience you have, including tsd rallyes (especially working checkpoints), road race worker experience, and especially if you have a ham radio liscense. Most events use ham radio for communication because of reliability and range. Most hams dont want to get anywhere near them race car contraptions. The workers want a radio in te lead and sweep cars. QED, a good chance at a ride. You can contact the SCCA in Denver (national hq) at (303) 790-1044. Ask for the pro rally director. Ask him for the name and phone number of the organizer, or better yet ask if he has the phone number for the worker coordinator. I hope this helps. It really is a first class way to see the event.
