It should be possible to purchase a can of freon with a marking compound added that will leave a (usually red) stain wherever the stuff leaks out. Most automotive supplies seem to carry this material, at least around here. Why don't you try putting some of this stuff in and see if you can spot the leak before you try replacing any components? You might get lucky and find that it's something cheap after all....
