A friend's '83 GTI that I used to drive also had a similar problem - finding first gear was a real problem! Fortunately, if you shift into second first, you get it. My '72 850 spider used to have a similar problem - if you didn't shift into second first, when you let the clutch out it would pop out of first and you'd be rolling backwards down the hill (oops)... -- Forward, comrades!
