I am posting this for a friend who is interested in creating custom
database systems for IBM-PC type machines. He is looking for support
software of either of two types:

1) Relational database systems like PC/FOCUS from Information Builders
Inc. PC/FOCUS has lots of neat features, but is *sloooow*, does not
compile, and has no provision to expand its language.

2) C support libraries such as Application-1 from LogiQuest, etc. This
means coding the database system in C, but making use of C routines to
do tricky stuff like record locking, networking, etc.

The problem is that systems in category 1 are powerful but make it
impossible to add new functions or commands. Systems in category 2
would allow more flexibility, but usually have simplistic data handling
mechanisms.

Does anyone out there know about good software in either of these
categories?  I would really appreciate any responses. I don't normally
