I suspect you have a VT-100 compatible terminal. On many of these terminals,
wrapping when reaching the end of line is broken; the cursor wraps but the last
typed character doesn't, or vice versa. Pretending that the terminal width is
79 avoids a lot of these problems.

What's worse, behavior at the end of the line isn't consistent from one VT1xx
clone to another.
