Ray Frank knows nothing about Frank Zappa, including his IQ. Indeed. The LA Weekly, a free LA semi-counterculture paper, printed the entirity of Mr. Zappa's statement (though not, unfortunately, the questions and answers that apparently followed, which lead to the newsmaking statement.) Mr. Zappa displayed ample intelligence, if perhaps not enough wisdom, in his statement. It was well-reasoned, but too inflammatory and rather insulting to certain Congressmen and their wives. Not the way to get things done in D.C. Interestingly, Mr. Zappa's hostility to certain members of the committee led to flashy stuff which caused the press to overlook his main point, his contention that the record companies were trading ratings on records for a bill to tax blank tapes and use the revenues to reimburse record companies for the money presumably lost to unauthorized taping of records. I didn't hear a word about this in any of the coverage of the hearings, though I admit I didn't look into them in depth. -- Peter Reiher reiher@LOCUS.UCLA.EDU {...ihnp4,ucbvax,sdcrdcf}!ucla-cs!reiher
