Austin, Tx Lines: 12 I have found that "THE UNIX OPERATING SYSTEM" by Kaare Christian (published by Wiley-Interscience) is a good basic reference for Unix novices. Part 1 covers the basics, Part 2 covers advanced topics so you can tackle them when you think you're ready and the abridged manual at the back has a good summary of the commands a novice is most likely to use with any frequency. The nice thing about this book is that, unlike typical Unix documentation, you don't find yourself wasting time weeding through a lot of detail to get the information you want.
