Not bad advice, but what characters are you playing?  An easier strategy
if you are playing a Caveman is: E- (engrave empty-handed) "Elbereth".
Then, since cavemen are usually equipped with a quantum of arrows, weild
your bow, and fire away.

And, of course, if you have a crossbow and bolts, or some rocks (even)
simply follow the same strategy, and let him have it.

Well, I usually follow the same strategy with nymphs, but a ring of
adornment does wonders.  Also, they don't make very good theives if
they are blinded (tourist).  Using your wands on something this "low"
is really something I would consider a waste.  I mean, use all of 
your magic on something that deserves it...like dragons, cockatrices...
