       Listening to shortwave utility stations,	or "utes",  is
       a  fascinating  pastime.	  Although  a general coverage
       receiver	is usually required, one can get  a  taste  of
       the action using	ordinary amateur gear.

       The 20 meter band coverage on many "amateur band	 only"
       transceivers  extends  to  14.500  MHz,	and  many non-
       amateur stations	can be heard in	the 14.4  -  14.5  MHz
       region.	Although most transmissions are	of the Spanish
       language	"smuggler-bootlegger" variety,	the  following
       stations	have been identified:
