I have a friend in India who is a ham-radio enthusiast and I 
wanted to find out what it takes to start communicating with
him over ham-radio.

Does anybody know:
1) Is it possible to communicate with India over ham ? I'm
   on the west coast of the U.S. near San Francisco.
2) What kind of equipment would I require to establish a
   reliable link ?
3) What does it take to get started ?
