It is basically a J-FET follower direct coupled into a PNP. My whip is about 3 feet long (anything much longer and I get broadcast overload). I once tried a large untuned shielded loop by throwing a length of RG-58 coax over the house roof. The ends were brought in a window and properly connected to the rcvr.
