Funny you should mention it! I went to see Max Creek in Boston last Friday night. It was about the 5th time i've seen them, and I felt it was about time I mntion them to the net. These guys are good. I've seen a few "Dead tribute" bands before (Timberwolf in N.J., Mr. Charlie in Philly), and I enjoyd them, but Max Creek is different. They play "in the style of the Grateful Dead", but they are not a Dead tribute band. They are original and creative. Also, they've been together for close to 10 years, I believe (correct me if I'm wrong, Josh!). They do about 30% Dead songs, abot 30% covers of other artists, and about 30% original stuff. Their musicianship, in terms of technical pproficiency with their instruments, though quite good, is definitely not up to the level of the Dead, and their songwriting is not nearly as good. However, they do lots of Dead-style jamming, lots more than the Dead do, and they are **GOOD** at it! They take off on long, sometimes spacy jams on most of the songs they do, and they'll do this at any time during the show. Their first set last Friday would have been what you would hope for in the second set of an incredibly good Dead show. They sound a lot like what the Dead sound like on the old Avalon Ballroom tapes. Well, for all you East Coast Deadheads, I strongly recommend that you check them out if you haven't already. They are based in Connecticut, and they play all over New England, and often at the Lone Star Cafe in New York. If you want to know where and whn you can see them, yes, there is a Max Creek hotline number, (203)653-7616 -------- "We used to play for silver, now we play for life" Seth
