Refinishing Problem Message-ID: <800@inuxd.UUCP> Date: Thu, 24-Oct-85 09:21:07 EDT Article-I.D.: inuxd.800 Posted: Thu Oct 24 09:21:07 1985 Date-Received: Fri, 25-Oct-85 04:02:08 EDT Distribution: net Organization: AT&T Consumer Products, Indianapolis Lines: 20 I have an antique dining room table that my wife has had several estimates made on refinishing. Each has responded that the previous owner has coated it with a "plastic" finish and will not touch the job. When something hot was inadvertantly was placed on the surface, the area turned white and partially lifted. It is a beautiful table and I have quite a bit of experience of refinishing but this is the first time I have encountered this type of finish and its removal. Does anyone have any suggestions or have had a similiar problem/solution? I am at the point of sanding off the coating "o-so-carefully with a belt sander to avoid using any stripper that could dammage the wood. I am also affraid of using a heat gun as I think they are primarily used for removing paint from a wood surface so a new coat of paint can be applied and any schorching of the wood wouldn't matter anyway. I don't think a veneer is used but that is something I will have to check very closely before I do any sanding. Any help will be greatly appreciated and THANKS in advance. R. C.
