Although it's clear that my daughter is Jewish _k'halacha_ (and has been/is being raised as such), I'm unclear as to whether I need a _get_ (bill of divorcement) in order to marry a Jew and/or have non-mamzer children. NOT that I am planning either of these; but I'm only 31, and recognize that people have been known to change their minds... :-) If I do need a _get_, or some other formal statement from my ex (such as a statement that he is not now, nor has ever been, a Jew), I may not be in as good a position to get him to cooperate as I am in now. I am obviously not Orthodox, nor am I a _ba`alat tshuva_, since I don't consider that I ever left. However, to avoid problems that my child(ren) might later have (especially given the current tenor of debate of the Orthodox vs. the rest of the organized Jewish tendencies), I would like to do this according to _halacha_. If anyone can either cite a reference dealing with this issue, or refer me to a competent rabbinic authority (I live in Brookline, Mass.), please contact me, either by electronic mail or U.Snail, with the information.
