Kirk was promoted to Admiral for being one of the few Captains to bring his ship safely back. After the V'Ger story, Kirk became a Captain again and the Enterprise went off on another five year mission. ST-TWOK, however takes place 15-16 years after Kirk first took command of the Enterprise. I got this impression from various articles and the novalizations of both movies. Kenneth Crist
