The fire broke out in some Hot Backups on the first floor and spread to some old directories, finally engulfing the entire file system. Jose Frink, the warehouse manager and the only employee of DPA based in Fresno called the fire "... a total disaster." Frink, who had been with the company for about four years after being drummed out of Caltech for running rampant among the fraternities, went on to describe the damage. "It's a total loss. All the files are gone, the directories are trashed and the ram is scrambled. All that remains is one case of mismatched socks that was miraculously left out on the loading dock." DPA operates the warehouse under cooperation with the data processing community at large. It is considered the nations largest repository of misplaced data, holding all the material that used to be in zero length files, all the links and pointers to files that were defined in now trashed directories, the contents of all floppy disks that had bad sectors, and the data structures that were in RAM when you last looked, but, for some reason, were not there when your program attempted to access them. DPA operates several warehouses around the country, in such sites as Fargo, North Dakota, Elizabeth, New Jersey, and Needles, California. Some of the sites, operated under exclusive contract with the government, have had their locations classified. Frink, while stating that the company would rebuild in fresno, did not know when the rebuilding would begin or how long it would take. He went on to assure the DP community that, effective immediately, the Bakersfield facility would begin to archive the materials that had previously been assigned to Fresno. -- Ed Greenberg; MicroPro International Corp.
