As I recall the incident, Paar resigned because the joke was censored
before air time.  He was constantly fighting the NBC censors over things
that would probably be allowed on the Saturday morning cartoons today, and
'resigned' several times.  I believe the WC joke was his last resignation;
he was replaced by a virtually unknown daytime game show host by the name
of Johnny Carson.  (Who? they all said.)
